Now this has been on my mind for some time. Can anyone explain why the Venusian Rangers only have rocket launchers as a heavy weapon option?

I mean with their main gusto being Jungle Warfare a rocket launcher would be virtually useless due to the short lines of sight and the general predominance of lighter enemies in real life.

Also I always loved the option from one of the older editions (was it the 2nd) where one could field an all HMG squad of Rangers.

Cheers,

Burkhard

I guess the idea is that they don't need heavy weapons to deal with infantry. They use stealthy tactics, rifles with special ammo, booby traps, and other tricks to deal with any enemies they find in the jungle. Since HMG's (And rocket launchers, yes) are bulky they probably don't see any need to outfit the venusian rangers with them when they can handle infantry fine with what they've got.

While they may not encounter vehicles much in the jungle, there are pesky flying and hovering ones such as purple sharks. In order for one of Bauhaus's most elite units not to be unprepared against such enemies, they can bring rocket launchers if needed, but I guess they probably won't on most missions.

Still, more specialists for venusian rangers would be nice. I'd love to see a sniper specialist for them.

I think they do not need more heavy weapons, rather some special weapons like a flamer, sniper rifle or shotgun. A shotgun for the squad commander would be nice. One of the older Max Steiner versions carried 2 submachine guns, something like double spray & pray, and this idea was implemented in the MC movie :D

Give it time guys, I am sure more options will show up when the Bauhaus faction book gets done.

Actually, man-pack weapons like a small(ish) rocket launcher and an LMG aren't too farfetched. SF squads these days are all about having as much of the appropriate firepower as possible. In the Jungle, if you assume two things, the RL is pretty good as a tool- it would have to be light and have a range of useful ammunition (AT, HE, Illumination, smoke, etc etc.). Rocket launchers that are more compact and versatile than current ones would be a great asset to these types of operators. However, being a wargame the key difference to reality is that the RL operators are not carrying a personal weapon like an assault rifle, where they normally would and then sling their RL when not needed.

A flamethrower and a sniper would both be useful jobs as well, along with more supporting roles like medic, comms, demolitions, etc.

Does it fit the fluff? Did 1/2e venusian rangers have this weapon? or is it new to WZR? It has been pointed out the fluff is not an absolute guide.

That said just cuz they fight in a jungle doesn't mean anything. Maybe they can shoot a personal shot of napalm into the jungle. Having a rocket launcher in the jungle for weapons like napalm or gas, or something similar would be able to blanket an area and is a highly useful weapon to have.

Why would you face less vehicles in a jungle? It's not like a tree will stop a tank.

That is of course true a tree wouldn't. Several would though. Especially when they are on different elevations, as well as entwined. While you might be able to mow them down, it would be insanely slow work. This is incindentally why the Wolfclaw battle tank had a massive saw-blade attached to the front in 1st ed RPG/Doomtrooper.

This also doesn't take into account the myriad of marsches usually found in jungles, slowing down tanks to a halt. Add to this that there is limited visibility, and special forces are more likely to carry C4 or satchel charges for taking out tanks, as that is usually the range you will be fighting them on anyway.

True but on the other hand they've had a thousand years more to figure out how to build tanks that overcome those shortcommings than we have.

And unlike us smart missiles, targeting systems and several other high tech technologies haven't made such a dent in the usefulness of a tank thus there would be more reason to improve upon the technology.

Well i would say there are two sides to this. If we are strictly speaking rules I am a firm believer that what we are getting is just a base. I would not be surprised if we will machine guns, sniper rifles and more in the future.
Then, fluff wise I don't think it is strange that rangers are getting a rocket launcher. It is more of a utility weapon that fills a gap in the ranger arsenal, more so than machine guns.
