My recommendations:

1st: close the forum. Don't take new members for a few days.
2nd: Create some system of double check the new members. How is it done in different forums?
3rd: reopen the forum.

Alternative: make sure a member of the admin team is ALWAYS checking the forum.

I know it is an important time for Prodos and you don’t want to offend anybody who could be willing to pledge money for the KS but at the moment it is almost an unsustainable situation.

yep, sometimes happens.
I keep an eye out and do what I can, normally you can tell by the username, but sometimes they have ones that seem real!

You may also think about adding a Voight-Kampff-esque humanity test to the sign up process. This usually requires the person signing up to answer a skill testing question (like "are you a spambot?" to which the answer should be a written "No/no"). Between that and a captcha it tends to cut down on the worst excesses. Basically, anything non-standard enough that a script is unlikely to be prepared for it and will throw a hissy and get blocked. Perhaps even as simple as asking what game these boards are for (along with a hint like "look at the site banner").

Also, I haven't checked, but does the board have flood detection? Forcing a 30 second to 1 minute delay between posts may cut down on some of the more prolific spammers. They seem to be able to post a lot of spam quickly so you may want to enforce flood protection strongly (and maybe even have a 2-3 strike system for it so that anything trying to bruteforce it gets their accounts locked).
