Having played some games before, I can say that...
a) Golgotha has just the right cost. She can do REALLY nasty stuff like eliminating cover from an enemy unit, casting a spell of her choosing, buffing everyone around her with +1"MovementModifier and +1A - and best of all, she can power blink 12"
Yeah, can't wait to try her out. She has some nifty abilities and can dish out pain in close combat. I think a good starting Warlord.

b) Alakhai is a sick joke and as he is now shouldnt cost more than 110 points. He has never managed to reach CC range, got shot or slaughtered by RD squads and his main ability (18" darkness) isnt that good because many weapons shoot at 18" anyway. At this cost, the darkness probably should have been 12".
Totally agree about the darkness ability. 18" just doesn't do that much. Maybe it would have better if they had said that "models within 18" get -10 to range" or something. Much nastier, but also possible to overcome for Cybertronic for some Resources, which is suitable.

You are right: Cards are what makes those Characters really special. And both Alakhai (Stun effect on shooting for enemy troop) and Golgotha (+2RS/CC for your squad) have excellent cards. This is something that should be a bit more present. Even with having enough of each card, it doesnt make a really big difference - and I think that with a wider selection of cards available (more troops=more cards), this will get less and less important.
I'm looking forwards to trying him with cards. Good news is I got a parcel with more Dark Legion stuff yesterday. The guy I bought them from also added Valpurgius' cards to the package, so now I have two sets of his cards.

And finally to the cards, again

If I just invest a hell lot of money and just buy every squad there is 5 times so I have every card in every quantity and you dont: Wouldnt you feel a bit cheated because I perhaps had the edge in that battle because I could use "Eye for an Eye" five times?
I think if you'd buy so much for the cards you would be a strange man

And here are some more shots of my Dark Legion stuff:
Nepharite
Undead Legionaire
Razide 2
(I repainted this model. The first paintjob was about 18 years old! This one has quite desaturated reds and yellows...this is because I painted over a green basecoat. So I used the same colors as on the other Razide, but the green made it impossible to get a good saturated color. Oh well)
And I have new shots of the other ones, now with the right bases:
