Been looking at the ISF rules and theres really only one major question i have that i didnt notice earlier.

At the top of pg46 it says "Each ISF squad receives a Passive Skill depending on a Warlord type and may purchase up to 3 additional specializations."
It does not specify that some options do not take up this maximum of 3, which worries me on weapon options

Depending on the warlord type taken they may take an HMG, Gehenna Puker, or Mandible Shotgun. Or an Iron Mastiff, for that matter.
Do these count towards the maximum 3 since theyre technically not a "passive" and the specific rule says how many times you can take it and when? I think it would immediately kill any flexibility this unit has if 2 of its 3 specialization slots are taken by special weapons by default...since their base gear is pretty bleh.

If you look carefully at each set of options, you'll see a passive bonus for each type of WL and a set of choices below them.

e.g.:
Warlord Type: Close Combat
Passive bonus: A +3 modifier to CC and a +2 modifier to ST.
• Furious Combatants (2 points per Model): The Model’s Hand Ripper receives a +1 modifier to RoA.
• Jungle Fighter: For 15 points 1 Model in the squad replaces its Invader Assault Rifle with a Gehenna Puker. Mutually exclusive with City Fighters specialisation. If the squad contains 10 Models, may be taken twice.
• City Fighters: For 10 points 1 Model in the squad replaces its Invader Assault Rifle with a Mandible Shotgun. Mutually exclusive with Jungle Fighters Specialisation. . If the squad contains 10 Models, may be taken twice.
• Zealous (2 points per Model): Every Model in the squad gains the Brutal special skill and a +2 modifier to CC and Con. • Night-Ops (3 points per Model): Every Model in the squad gains the Camouflage(3) and the Stalk special skills.
• Paratroopers (3 points per Model): Every Model in the squad gains the Rapid Deployment special skill.

The passive bonus is the +3CC and +2ST. The three that could be chosen can come from the bullet points (or the Warlord: All bullet points).

Some specialisations can be taken twice. For example, if you had a squad of 10 ISF, you could take two Ghenna Pukers for the stated points, using 2/3 of your specialisations.

Is that what you're asking?

Yeah, i was wondering about the gun swap options (and iron mastiffs i guess since theyre in the same boat) taking up the 3 extra slots. Their base gear is abysmal so you kinda have to get the upgraded weapons, thus throw some really nice rules out the window. Admittedly it would stack up in price quickly if you had 3 passive abilities and the 2 special guns, but thats what i thought they were at first.

Not really sure whats suppose to set them apart from Trenchers now that i noticed this. Theyre more expensive since the gun upgrade isnt free, lack the turn to burn tokens, and either have junk weapons for good rules or good weapons and basically no rules lol. Bonus to RS with a ranged/tech warlord isnt really much of a boon when your gun is still the basic infantry weapon.

Don't knock the basic assault rifle. WZR is one of the few games that got it right. As far as the rules, there are some skills you can buy that you can have no mTter the WL, such as heavy armor, which is a must. I take that, and the charger HMG, and the other. Choice depends on my WL. I e played the once with a ranged WL, and they were. A thron in dougs side due to their IA 13 and RS 14 shooting. I like the flexibility of them a lot.

Don't forget that most 'elite' units have their corporaton's basic assault rifle (although some may have a minor benefit) or similar basic weapon.

Bauhaus blitzers, rangers; capitol free marines, sea lions, howling banshees; mishima hatamoto, tiger dragons, crimson devils; Imperial ISF, life dragoons (I think) possibly something else
