Post subject:  What warlord do you use?

So my idea for this thread is to bounce some ideas back and forth regarding our choices of warlords. Imperial have a few of names ones, a couple of generic ones and innumerable combinations for custom warlords, currently being the largest faction. I've only tried out the standard Trencher Officer (ranged), a custom Blood Beret (close combat) and Timothy Macguire (tech).

The Trencher Officer was pure disappointment, but I guess he has his uses if you intend to bunker down. He is also quite cheap.

My custom Blood Beret warlord was min-maxed for close combat, being able to dish out a horrendous amount of pain once he got stuck in. I found the Close Combat Specialist skill really useful since it provided my warlord with a free 13 IA while using a heavy chain ripper, which means you don't really have to use up your points and number of choices buying a shield or Ablative Armour. The downside with this character is that he has to run over to the enemy. His Stalk special skill can save him from a few bullets with his name on them, but on the whole, this character tends to draw lots of fire with little to no way of avoiding it unless the terrain allows for a covered approach

For a tech warlord, I don't see any better option than Timothy Macguire unless you are really strapped for points. He can easily hold his own in any kind of combat and against most foes. My experience is that he works best in a close combat-oriented force because of his ability to block about 95 % of all kinds of shooting attacks in a bubble, 8-12" in radius. The downside is that he is really pricey.

Going, I'd like to try out a custom Storm Trencher or ISF close combat warlord because of their abilities to hunt the enemy down without being exposed to too much fire. What I don't have is an idea for an interesting ranged warlord. Has anyone come up with a fun concept? And what about Brig.Gen. Rist?

I havent messed with custom warlords yet, i really should because the ones we have are either lame (Officer) or kinda cheesy (Timothy). I use Timothy every time because i hate the Officer and i dont have a custom warlord and every game he pulls something off that is just insane, or totally nullifies the enemy's token tactics (oh man Brotherhood hates him since he removes bastions without even trying)

Rist on paper seems kinda meh but i bought the MOW megadeck and while flipping through it i found a ton of good cards bonded to him. Kinda makes me wonder if hes worth while.

His cards are pretty good, but the thing to keep in mind is that he's a vehicle destroying monster. Against any vehicle with the bulky rule, he will on average inflict 20 hits, and assuming an armor value of let's say, 14, deal 7 points of structure damage. (again, on average)

And Oblati are amazing. Being able to take them in an Imperial army is very cool!

Quite frankly the ability to bring Brotherhood makes me NOT want him because i view brotherhood as complete utter cheese. Ive literally only beaten the Brotherhood guy here once, and it has nothing to do with tactics it has all to do with free-cast spells making him counter my army by default and have unbelievably reliable shooting from inquis spam. He thinks hes gimping himself by bringing so many inquis and going sword/board troops but hes too oblivious that its actually nastier than what he was doing before.

I refuse to play him now because every single unit comparison between him and any army he puts off as "grass is greener on the other side" - even challenged him to use my guys and i use his...utterly stomped him...still doesnt believe brotherhood is bs.

I refuse to bring cheese to the table. I like a fair match, not a stomp. Brotherhood only stomp.

The Trencher Officer was a dissapointment.

I've used a Blood Beret CC custom for two games and enjoy him.

I used Timothy once, think he is fun and would definitely use him in a tournament that didn't allow customs. He also allows me to take mastiffs with my ISF.

I made a custom ISF Tech warlord with an iron mastiff and played two games with him yesterday. The mastiffs are niiice. The warlord was not nearly as good as Timothy, but the dog and the Slide Packs were fun to use together.

In my first game with Imperials against my Brotherhood opponent who usually has a high amount of close combat troops with Impenetrable armour 14, and strength bonuses from psychic buffs, I went with P.D. Righteous Rist, with his special ability to keep shooting at a unit until he misses, and can for 3 T2B cards can pass the skill onto Trencher units in the army who roll a 1 - 4 for their RS skill test.

I took 2 squads of Trenchers with NCOs, a company standard in 1 squad, a Hurricane with gun nest, and a squad of 10 Special Forces with IR goggles and spec ops upgrades to lure his Mortifactors and other nasties away. They died but took a lot of enemy out before they finally kicked the bucket. The NCO ability to use the ribbons to call in gas bombardments really took their toll on his Brotherhood CC troops, and even hurt his Mortifactors.

The ability to get extra free shots in though made the day, and Rist took out (well finished off) a Judicator all by himself after he kept hitting 9 shots in a row.

I have not tried the other Warlords yet.

Since the update:

Still not a fan of the Imperial Officer straight out of the book as a warlord, but if you use HotSS, you can buff him to decent levels.

Rist is very good now. Better than very good. With his Oblati and some RD Valkyries; an imperial officer lord; forward observing, company banner NCOs with Trenchers; and 4 Greyhounds. Ouch.

Or scratch the Valkyries and throw in some Dragoons with a mortar.
