The (x) in the rule is because the value of (X) is not fixed. Some models may have Heal (3) while others may have Heal (6) it will be noted in the unit entry or the leveling up rules in the advanced game.

The Value of X will be given in the specific special rule associated with the model. Like a level 3 Colonial Marine using the advanced game rules will have Heal (6)

CrusaderJD...
Heal: "When a Model with the Heal (X) (P) Special Skill loses a wound, take a Heal (X) Test with a Test value equal to X. If the Test is passed, then ignore the wound. Heal rolls may not be made against wounds suffered as a result of a Power Shot."
The (X) is the maximum value on the test to pass the test. Ie, Heal (8) means that when you lose a wound you get to roll and on a 8 or less you get to ignore the wound. Hence, Heal (8) is better than Heal (7), for example.
